1418007 Anodes for diaphragm cells SOLVAY & CIE 5 Dec 1972 [6 Dec 1971] 56065/72 Heading C7B An electrolytic cell for electrolysis in which a gas is given off, e.g. electrolysis of alkali metalchloride, comprises a series of alternating anodes 6 and cathodes 16 which are vertical and parallel to each other; the anodes each comprising a pair of parallel, vertical, co-extensive metal plates 2, 3 defining a channel open at upper and lower ends, which plates are of Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, W or an alloy thereof, and are coated with a platinum metal or compound thereof, and which each have disposed at the upper edge thereof, forming an extension of the anode plate, a panel 8 or 9 which is inclined away from the vertical towards the adjacent cathode over at least part of its height. The cell shown includes base 29, lid 14 and intermediate walls of which one forms an anode support whilst the other three walls support the cathode assembly of cathode pockets 16, each enclosed by a diaphragm 17. The panels 8 and 9 may be of insulating material or may be formed integrally with the anode plates, with the surface adjacent a cathode coated with a metal or compound of the Pt group.
|
