PURPOSE:To reduce the number of times of conversion and to perform early stage processing, by a method wherein conversion is performed only with respect to the black dot present in the outer peripheral part of a character font when the character font is expanded and the shape thereof is altered and, next, the internal white dot part left in a new font is fully painted black. CONSTITUTION:An original pattern memory area 1 respectively issues whether the dots at positions (x-1, y), (x+1, y), (x, y-1), (x, y+1) are white or black to inverters 2-5 as outputs when the position (x, y) of the original pattern is given to said memory area 1 and issues whether the dot at the position (x, y) is white '0' or black '1' to an AND gate 6 as output. The outputs of the inverters 2-5 are issued to a conversion circuit 8 through an OR gate 7 and the AND gate 6. The conversion circuit 8 operates conversions f1(x, y), f2(x, y) when the black dot (x, y) is present in the peripheral part of the original pattern and sets the position (X, Y) of a conversion pattern memory area 9 to '1'. When the scanning of all of dots is finished, a judge circuit 18 sends output to a painting-out circuit 20 and painting-out is started to set the interior of the peripheral part to '1'.
