PURPOSE:To eliminate the unnecessary recording of tracking scanning information and to prevent recording tracks from overlapping with each other by providing a recording means which forms a new recording track on a recording medium while tracking a recording head to a guide pattern for tracking recorded on the recording medium. CONSTITUTION:The recording means 5 is provided which forms the new recording track TR on the recording medium 2 while tracking the recording head to the guide pattern PT1 for tracking; and the guide pattern PT1 is recorded prior to the formation of the recording track TR on the recording medium 2, and the new recording track TR is formed while the recording head is tracked to the guide pattern PT1 for tracking. Consequently, the tracking guide pattern PT1 needs not be formed in an area where no recording track TR is formed on the recording medium 2, and information can be recorded on the recording medium 2 to high density.
