The generator (1) contains, connected in series, a high-voltage source (capacitor 4), a spark gap (5) and a load resistor (6) and a switching point in parallel with the load resistor (6). This switching point shortcircuits the load resistor (6) after a time delay determining the pulse width ( DELTA t) of the high-voltage squarewave pulses. This generator (1) is intended to supply high-voltage squarewave pulses with steep edge slopes whilst being of simple structure. This is achieved by the fact that the switching point is a creeping-spark gap (7). This creeping-spark gap (7) is dimensioned in such a manner that the transit time of a leader channel advancing in the creeping-spark gap (7) after the closing of the switching spark gap (5) is equal to the pulse width ( DELTA t). <IMAGE>
