The indicator, designed to display measurement values and indicate engine operation, condition, faults etc., incorporates at least one liquid crystal cell (13) and is preferably to be used in large liquid crystal displays in motor vehicles. The cell (13) displays areas of different colours (A, B). To allow flexible and easy colour changes for a specific colour, a light guide (14) is fitted to the reverse side of the transmissive liquid crystal cell, extending over at least one of the areas (A). This guide radiates forward the coloured light of a light source (16) situated at one end (15) of the light guide (14) from the latter's surface, which is directed towards the liquid crystal cell (13).
