PURPOSE:To obtain an oxynitride glass having excellent strength, by spinning a sol solution produced by hydrolysis of a metal alkoxide, nitriding the produced fibrous gel and heat-treating the nitride at a high temperature in a He gas stream. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution of metal alkoxide (e.g. silicon tetraethoxide) and/or substituted metal alkoxide (e.g. the compound of formula) is hydrolyzed and the obtained sol solution is spun within a specific viscosity range to obtain a fibrous gel. The gel is nitrided in nitrogen gas and/or ammonia gas stream and then heat-treated at 300-1,500 deg.C in a helium gas stream to obtain the objective oxynitride glass. The oxynitride glass produced by the above process is suitable as a reinforcing fiber to be incorporated in various structural materials such as plastics, concrete. etc. |
