PURPOSE:To erase noise components and to obtain image information having an excellent S/N, by erasing the remaining noise image on a panel by means of an erasing means before picture formation is made after power supply. CONSTITUTION:Rod-like erasing lamps 15 are provided in the direction vertical to the sub-scanning direction (shown by the arrow Y) on the side of a light condensing body 13 opposite to the sub-scanning direction Y and a remaining latent image is erased by projecting intense light to a panel 1. When a unit 5 moves to the direction opposite to the scanning direction Y, the erasing lamps 15 are turned on in the midway of the movement and all of the images remaining on the panel 1 or noise components produced by the background, etc., while this image reader is kept untouched for a long time are erased. When the unit 5 reaches its uppermost position, exposure to radiant rays is performed and a latent image is formed on the panel 1. After the latent image is formed, the unit 5 moves to the direction Y and the radiation image produced by the exposure is read by two-dimensional scanning. Therefore, the S/N in image reading is improved and more correct image information can be obtained.
