PURPOSE:To obtain a magnesium-base alloy remarkably improved in tensile strength, elongation, creep rupture strength, etc., by specifying respective contents of Al, Si, Mn, and Zn. CONSTITUTION:The magnesium-base alloy having improved mechanical properties has a composition consisting of 1.0-5.5% Al, 0.2-1.5% Si, 0.1-1.0% Mn, <=2.0% Zn, and the balance essentially Mg and further containing, preferably, 0.1-100ppm Ti. In this alloy, intermetallic compounds crystallized out, such as Mg2Ti are finely dispersed. The above alloy can be obtained by adding Ti by about 0.01-0.1% in the form of TiCl3, TiCl4, Al-Ti alloys, etc., to a molten magnesium-base alloy containing the above chemical components Al, Si, Mn, and Zn and by subjecting insoluble matter to sedimentation.
