PURPOSE:To easily output image about only a contour when a normal character original is inputted by selecting one out of plural output densities according to a value obtaining by binarizing contour information. CONSTITUTION:A video multiplexer 12 and an address multiplexer 17 sequentially read plural pieces of image data in memory banks 0, 1, 2 and 3 in that order on a line basis. The image data written in the memory banks 0, 1, 2 and 3 is sequentially read out, and transmitted to a contour processing circuit 18 and a nonprocessing circuit 19. An input from an operation part 11 decides whether contour processing or nonprocessing is needed. If the contour processing is executed, a density slice level and an output density after the contour processing are decided. If the nonprocessing is selected, positive/negative conversion and so on are decided, and transmitted to an output device 113 through a selector 112, thereby forming an image. As for the decision of the output density, one is decided according to the value obtained by binarizing contour information.
