Composite material, such as for example fibre-reinforced ceramic, comprising a matrix and a reinforcing material embedded therein for taking up mechanical and/or thermal loads in an elongated, fibre-like structure. Here the reinforcing material or the fibre-like structure 8 has at least one local thickening 11 of the cross-section or increase in its surface area. Furthermore, a plurality of fibre-like structures 8 can be present in the matrix 7, each of which has at least one local thickening of the cross-section or increase in its surface area. With such a structure of the reinforcing material, the crack extension of a crack is inhibited by it being diverted at a bulge and arriving in a pressure region of the internal stress distribution. In this way, the crack tip is closed and the crack is stopped. The new composite material enables the crack growth phase as a component of the residual lifetime of a component manufactured from the new material to be considerably increased. <IMAGE>
