The invention relates to the finishing of metal bars. In order to automatically position, into the notches 4 of the lower blade 3 of a shear cutter, the metal bars 2 whose ends are to be cut and which arrive in the form of a sheet over a line of rollers, provision is made for: a. Downstream of the shear cutter, a roller 8 which can move transversely and rotates in the opposite direction from the rollers of the line, in order to cause the sheet of bars 2 to slip (spin): b. Upstream of the shear cutter, means for assembling the sheet of bars 2 on the side B of the line; c. A distributor 6 which can move transversely, including two vertically movable fingers 13, 13', for positioning the bars 2; d. A copier 10 provided with teeth 11 made for interacting with the feet 17, 17' of the fingers 13, 13'. The synchronised translational movement of the roller 8 and of the distributor 6 towards the side A of the line causes a reciprocating movement of the fingers 13, 13' which successively ensure the retention, guiding and accurate positioning of each bar 2 in each notch 4 of the blade 3 of the shear cutter. <IMAGE>
