PURPOSE:To produce an alkylarylacarbinol industrially advantageously, by hydrogenating an aromatic ketone in the presence of a specific compound to dissolve a promoter, a low-boiling solvent, a hydrogenating catalyst and a basic promoter. CONSTITUTION:In obtaining an alkylarylacarbinol (e.g. methylphenylcarbinol, etc.) shown by formula II by hydrogenating an aromatic ketone (e.g. acetophenone, etc.) whodh by formula I OR<1> is 1-5C alkyl or 1-2C lower alkoxy; R<2> is 1-2C lower alkyl) in a low-boiling organic solvent such as methanol, ethanol, etc., in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst such as Raney nickel, etc., and a basic promoter such as sodium acetate, potassium acetate, etc., a compound (e.g. glycerin, etc.) which is a nonreducing high-boiling compound to dissolve the promoter and has a higher boiling point than the reaction product is present. EFFECT:Can prevent precipitation of salt after solvent removal. |
