A brake booster (1) with a sudden step up is presented, in which the booster is designed as a circulatory booster. This means that in the unpressurised state the pump (35) pumps through a circuit at zero pressure, which is formed, inter alia, by the control chamber (27) and the axial bore (29). When the brake is actuated, the opening (38) of the axial bore (29) is inserted into the seal (37) on the inner piston (18), so that the flow of pressure medium is throttled and a controlled pressure builds up in the control chamber (27). This pressure acts on the inner piston (18) and the sleeve (16), so that consequently the brake pressure can also build up in the pressure chambers (10, 11). Should the pump (35) fail, the control piston (26) transmits the pedal forces directly to the inner piston (27), so that only the annular area A 1 of the inner piston acts in the pressure medium chamber (10). <IMAGE>
