The invention relates to an apparatus for cooling flat rolling stock, particularly sheet and strip, by means of a water curtain with laminar flow, water boxes with side walls extending transversely over the entire width of the rolling stock and forming the slit nozzles and with end walls which delimit the length of the side walls being arranged above and/or below the rolling stock. In order, on the one hand, to avoid wastage of cooling water in the case of changing widths of rolling stock and, on the other hand, to allow the setting of specific cooling conditions for all widths of rolling stock encountered, it is proposed that the end walls should be displaceable individually or simultaneously in opposite directions along the side walls in the longitudinal direction of the slit nozzle. <IMAGE>
