The device for retaining sheets, e.g. the pages of an opened book, has a plate 1 and a clamping strip 5 which is articulated on the plate and is prestressed in the direction of the plate by means of a spring 18. In this arrangement, the articulation of the clamping strip is achieved by an actuating lever 6 which is mounted such that it can pivot with respect to the plate and holds the clamping strip such that it can pivot with respect to the plate, it being possible for the clamping strip to pivot with respect to the actuating lever itself. <IMAGE>
