A process for the pyrolysis of a solid carbonaceous material is described, in which the material is subjected to heat under controlled atmospheric conditions for the volatilisation of the volatile particles, according to which the heat transfer material used is a particulate magnetisable substance, in which the major part of the particles has a particle size of less than 5 mm, in intimate contact with the material, and the substance is separated from the residual material by exposing the mixture to the action of an electric or magnetic field, so that separation of the magnetisable substance from the residual material takes place. |
