Instrument for meat classification

This instrument is used to measure tissue thickness in animal carcases by forcing a pointed shaft into the meat and reading the penetration depth from a millimetre scale. A penetration element and plunger are held in the body by a spring. A millimetre scale is drawn on the top surface of the plunger. The gun is primed by pulling the plunger back until the trigger locks into the inset. The gun is held against the carcase between the 10th and 11th rib midway between the breastbone and back. The trigger is pulled to release the plunger. The spring forces the penetration element into the tissue. The tissue depth is read from the millimetre scale.
