In the case of a piece of furniture on which to sit or lie, shafts 5 are fixed to the underside of the lying area 3. The shafts 5 are assigned bearings 6 which are fixed in the bedding space 2. In the horizontal position of the lying area 3, the bearings 6 and the shafts 5 are located at a distance from one another, and the lying area 3 is horizontally displaceable by this distance, so that after displacement, the shafts 5 are received in the bearings 6 and the lying area 3 can be swung up. It is thus possible to lift and lower the lying area with a minimum of effort, the constructional complexity for this being minimal. <IMAGE>
