PURPOSE:To produce arachidonic acid or arachidonic acid-containing lipid in high yield and in a short time, by cultivating a microorganism belonging to the genus Mortierella in a medium having a hydrocarbon, fatty acid, fatty acid salt or fats and oils. CONSTITUTION:A preculture solution of a microorganism such as Mortierella elongate SAM0219, Mortierella exigua IF08571, etc., belonging to the genus Mortierella, capable of producing arachidonic acid, is inoculated into a liquid or a solid medium and cultivated. Production of arachidonic acid can be increased by adding a hydrocarbon such as hexadacane, etc., a fatty acid such as oleic acid, etc., or fats and oils such as olive oil, coconut oil, etc. Arachidonic acid-containing lipid is obtained by solvent extraction from the mold. |
