[Problem] To provide an abnormality detection system and abnormality detection method capable of detecting, at an initial stage, an abnormality occurring at a facility such as a chemical plant, oil refinery or mill, or thermal power plant. [Solution] An abnormality detection system has an optical fiber (26), a backscattered light detector (20), and a data processing unit (30). The backscattered light detector (20) is connected to one end side and another end side of the optical fiber (26), irradiates light into the optical fiber (26) from the one end side to acquire a first backscattered light intensity distribution, and irradiates light into the optical fiber (26) from the other end side to acquire a second backscattered light intensity distribution. The data processing unit (30) uses the first intensity distribution, the second intensity distribution, and a standardization function to calculate the transmission loss at each position in the length direction of the optical fiber (26) and determines whether there is an abnormality on the basis of the results of the calculation. |
