When a load is also to be moved horizontally during lifting, it is necessary to have a lifting appliance in which the load path has a vertical and a horizontal component. The lifting appliance possesses a travelling trolley which is movable along a horizontal path and which is designed in the manner of a rope pulley rotating during the movement of the travelling trolley. A load rope, to the lower free end of which the load is fastened, can thus be wound onto and unwound from the rope pulley. As a result, during the horizontal movement of the travelling trolley, the load is raised at the same time, with the result that a load path running obliquely from the bottom upwards is obtained.
