A digital regulator for state variables, especially for heaters with different modes of operation, has an adjustment device for the required temperature values and for other state variables for two or more modes of operation. The required temperature values can be increased or reduced by depressing one of the two keys of a pair of keys and then appear in a display field. In order to be able to carry out such an adjustment of the required value, a corresponding shift-key must be depressed, which carries out the selection of the desired mode of operation. However, depressing the shift-key is not necessary for a selected mode of operation, for example the day program. On the contrary, the adjustment of the required value in this selected mode of operation is already selected automatically by depressing one of the two keys of the pair of keys. The same applies when other state variables are adjusted by the digital regulator to a prespecified adjustable required value in two or more modes of operation.
