PURPOSE:To prevent the disordered array of sheets on a tray by providing the sheet storage device of an electronic copying machine and the like with a sensor for detecting the upper surface level of the tray, a driving means for lowering the tray by a predetermined level and a control means for prohibiting the lowering of the tray. CONSTITUTION:A sheet storage device comprises a transfer and reversal block 100 capable of reversing selectively sheets discharged from an image formation device such as a printer and classified storage block 200 having a tray 211 for storing sheets discharged from feed rollers 123 and 124. Also, the classified storage block 200 comprises a shift block 300 for shifting the tray 211 in a widthwise direction on a horizontal level whenever the predetermined number of sheets are stored, and an elevating block 400 for lowering the tray 211 intermittently. And when the upper surface of sheets stored in the tray 21 has been detected by a photo-sensor 218, the elevating block 400 lowers the tray 211 by a predetermined level. After the lowering operation, the fall of the tray 211 is prohibited until the storage of succeeding sheets, even if the sensor 218 has outputted a signal.
