The ranging sensor, operating on the triangulation principle, has a plurality of measuring ranges (/Z1, /Z2) of differing size and resolution, lying one on top of the other or one behind the other. This is achieved by the axis of projection (Z1) being imaged on the basis of the Scheimpflug principle in each case with a different linear magnification and at different field angles onto a plurality of position-sensitive photoelectric detectors (D1, D2). In the event of overranging of the measuring range (/Z2) of higher resolution but relatively small size, the signals of the measuring range (/Z1) of larger size but lower resolution may serve for feedback. <IMAGE>
