Sol. copolymers (I) of dichlorosilanes of formula RRSiCl2 with bis(chlorosilyl)methanes of formula ClRR'Si-CH2-SiRR'Cl (R, R'=H or opt. substd. alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkylaryl or arylalkyl) are claimed. Prepn. fo (I) comprises copolymerisation of a solvent with aid of Na or K. Solvent is neutral and has b.pt. above m.pt. of the alkali metal, or is electron donor, partic. tetrahydrofuran. Copolymer is prepd. at 60-140 deg.C.
