PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for producing drugs such as various prostaglandins, etc., in high optical yield, efficiently and industrially advantageously, by bringing 4-hydroxy-2-cyclopentenone into contact with an optically active rhodium complex. CONSTITUTION:4-Hydroxy-2-cyclopentenone shown by formula I (- line is any ratio of alpha-bond and beta-bond) is brought into contact with an optically active rhodium complex shown by formula II [binap is optically active 2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl; L is ligand; X is perchlorate or tetrafluroborate; n is 1 or 2] at -20-70 deg.C to give optically active 4-hydroxy-2- cyclopentenone and 1,3-cyclopentanedione shown by formula III (* mark is asymmetric carbon having induced optical activity). EFFECT:The production is carried out by the use of readily obtainable compounds in high yield, simply and under mild conditions and a small number of processes.
