PURPOSE:To easily obtain the titled compound useful for the scrubbing of acidic gas, in high yield, by reacting a tertiary alkylamine with a halogenated alcohol in a solvent containing water. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III can be produced by reacting a tertiary alkylamine compound of formula I (R1-R3 are methyl or ethyl) (e.g. tertiary butylamine) with a halogenated alcohol of formula II (R4 is H or methyl; X is Cl or Br; n is 1-3) (e.g. ethylene chlorohydrin) in a water- containing solvent (e.g. water, mixture of water and alcohol, etc.) at 100-180 deg.C for 2-3hr. The amount of the amine is 1.0-5.0mol per 1mol of the halogenated alcohol and that of the solvent is 0.5-10.0pts.wt. per 1pt.wt. of the halogenated alcohol.
