PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound inexpensively and industrially, by reacting an alkali metal sulfide with a dihaloaromatic compound by a specified four-stage process. CONSTITUTION:In stage 1, an alkali metal sulfide (A) (e.g., Na2S) and a dihaloaromatic compound (B) (e.g., dichlorobenzene), e.g., p-dichlorobenzene, are polymerized together at 180-235 deg.C in the presence of 0.5-2.4mol of water (C) per mol of the effective feed of component A until the conversion of component B reaches 80mol% or above and the melt viscosity of the formed polyarylene sulfide (PAS) reaches 5-500 P. In stage 2, water is added to the reaction system and the reaction mixture is heated with agitation at 245-290 deg.C in the presence of 2.5-7.0mol of water per mol of component A and settled to form two phases of a dilute polymer solution phase and a thick polymer solution phase. In stage 3, the thick polymer solution phase is extracted and reacted at 245-350 deg.C in a polymerization apparatus for high-viscosity use to obtain PAS of a melt viscosity >=1,000 P. In stage 4, the formed PAS in a molten state is discharged from the apparatus.
