PURPOSE:To reduce the drying cost by decreasing the water content of a fluoropolymer powder, by contacting the polymer with an organic liquid and separating water contained therein by the addition of the organic liquid. CONSTITUTION:A wet fluoropolymer powder obtained by emulsion-polymerizing or suspension-polymerizing a fluorine-containing monomer (e.g., tetra fluoroethylene) is brought into contact with an organic liquid. As the organic liquid, a liquid which is insoluble or difficultly soluble in water, has a property of wetting the fluoropolymer and has a low latent heat of vaporization is prefer able. Examples of said liquids include 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane and trichloroethylene. In this way, the water content of the polymer powder can be decreased by repelling the water in the polymer powder with the organic liquid, and therefore the heat energy required in the drying process can be decreased.
