The reference value for an electronic engine power control or adjustment system (14), emitted by an accelerator pedal sensor (10) is limited in such a way that a maximum admissible speed adjustment per unit time (dn/dt) is not exceeded. The limiting begins above an engine speed threshold (nS) and reduces the admissible speed adjustment per unit time (dn/dt) to the value zero if the maximum admissible speed (nmax) of the internal combustion engine is reached. Adjustment to the dn/dt value is performed by means of a proportional and integral control unit (20, 21). The dynamics of the motor vehicle in different gears are taken into account by varying the control parameters as a function of the ratio of engine speed (n) to speed of travel (v), which is supplied by the gear identification circuit (15). In addition a facility is provided for switching between two sets of control parameters which either permit a rapid deviation control, accepting the overswing, or a slower control avoiding any overswing. The method for limiting the engine speed can also be used for limiting the speed of travel (v) of the motor vehicle to a predeterminable maximum speed.
