The invention relates to a braking apparatus for a cross-country ski. Such braking apparatuses are known, to facilitate the ascent. According to the invention, a braking apparatus is proposed which is suitable for descents and thus reduces the danger of falling. This braking apparatus does not, however, impair the slip properties on the level and can be rapidly brought into the active position. This is achieved, according to the invention, by a vertically adjustable brake belt arranged within the running surface of the ski.
