PURPOSE:To eliminate exfoliation of sliding surface parts of a piston ring during its operation, by forming a nitrified titanium layer of hard quality on a foundation layer rich in a quality of close attachment and softness. CONSTITUTION:In a vacuum vessel 4 reducing the pressure, metal chrome of an evaporation source is heated by an HCD type electron gun 8 and evaporated, thereafter nitrogen gas is gradually introduced. Nitrogen in the vessel reacts upon the metal chrome, and a mother material 1 forms a foundation layer consisting of the metal chrome and chrome nitride. In the point of time the foundation layer obtains a predetermined thickness, a crucible 6 is rotated, and a file of titanium nitride is formed on the foundation layer by evaporating metal titanium 5b. Accordingly, a piston ring obtains on its peripheral sliding surface the foundation layer, consisting of the metal chrome and the chrome nitride, and the film of the titanium nitride, and the piston ring, when it is in operation, is prevented from exfoliating the sliding surface.
