PURPOSE:To make the sufficient mixing of air with fuel possible by forming a continuous and flat guide surface for an air flow on the opening periphery of a combustion chamber along its peripheral direction. CONSTITUTION:A continuous and flat guide surface 10 for an air flow is formed on the opening periphery of a combustion chamber 3 in a piston crown surface 1 along its peripheral direction. The periphery of the said guide surface 10 is connected to the piston crown surface 1 through an inclined surface 11 having a prescribed angle. therefore the air flow turning round the piston crown surface 1 can flow into the combustion chamber 3 without striking against the said guide surface 10. Consequently,the swirl S can flow into the combustion chamber 3 without damping to secure the uniform swirl Sa in the combustion chamber 3. In addition to that, since an angle %theta4 between. the periphery and the inner periphery wall 4 of the combustion chamber 3 is constant in the peripheral direction, the condition on which the air flow turns round the angle theta4 becomes equal in either turning direction. Thus the strength of squish and reverse squish, and their directions can be certainly made uniform.
