The invention relates to the manufacture of aluminium by electrolysis of a bath of cryolite and alumina. It relates to the maintenance of the anode device, and especially to processes for the treatment of anode rods during their replacement in the course of the production of aluminium. The process comprises the extraction of the rods from the lower level of the anode, cooling them with a liquid agent, for example water, and replacing them in the anode at the upper level. Cooling of the rods is carried out by immersion in the liquid agent, in which they are held until their temperature becomes lower than or equal to 200 DEG C. The invention can be applied to the production of aluminium by electrolysis of a bath of cryolite and alumina.
