PURPOSE:To adjust a character width at the time of printing while an original document is preserved, by mounting a collation means for collating document data and a table, a memory means for storing the document data in the display width indicated by the table and a display means of a document. CONSTITUTION:The character code is read from a main memory part 6 in the order of characters inputted to an original document memory region 6A. Each character code is sent to a pattern collation part 5 from a pattern memory part 4 to discriminate whether said character code corresponds to a pattern objective character. As a result, when said one character is not the pattern objective character, the character width information thereof and the character code are stored in a display document memory region 6B. When said character is the pattern objective character, the next one character is read from the original document memory region 6A and, when said character corresponds to a two-character pattern, a two-character pattern conversion table is read from the pattern memory part 4 to be written in the display document memory region 6B. When said character does not correspond to the two-character pattern, it is discriminated whether said character is a three-character pattern and, when said character does not correspond thereto, a signal showing that pattern matching does not come into existence is outputted and the character width of the first one character is decided as an 'em' size.
