A microtome (1) has a sample arm (11) with a specimen arm (18) which can be displaced in the axial direction with respect thereto and on whose front end a specimen holder (19) and a displacement sensor (61, 62, 64) are mounted. The specimen is embedded in a sample block (63) made from transparent plastic. The sample block (63) is illuminated from the rear with the aid of an optical fibre (65). Provided on the sample block (63) in the vicinity of the front end is a marking (62) which is projected with the aid of an optical system (64) onto an optoelectronic potentiometer (61). <IMAGE>
