According to the invention, articles are packaged by being provided on the top side with a top sheet 9 and subsequently being wrapped in a protective film. During the film wrapping, the top sheet is held pressed down against the article. The size of the top sheet 9 is therefore advantageously chosen such that its edge sections 9' reach beyond the article 1. These edge sections are folded down over the article and are subsequently wrapped in film at the same time as parts of the article which are situated below the edge sections are wrapped. An advantageous device for the realization of this method incorporates a top sheet applicator, which is coupled to a winding station and is arranged to use a top sheet holder 11 to place a top sheet 9 one at a time on top of the article and to hold the top sheet pressed down against the article whilst this is wrapped in film.
