PURPOSE:To produce the titled copolymer having high stability without using particular apparatus, by polymerizing chloroprene and an acrylic acid compound in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor and a specific molecular weight modifier using an alkali metal salt of a specific aromatic sulfonic acid derivative as an emulsifier. CONSTITUTION:Chloroprene and (meth)acrylic acid are copolymerized by using an emulsifier consisting of an alkali metal salt of an alkylbenzenesulfonic acid having 6-18C alkyl group and an alkali metal salt of a formaldehyde condensate of beta-naphtalenesulfonic acid in a system containing 5-30ppm of a chloroprenepolymerization inhibitor based an whole monomers before the start of the polymerization reaction in the presence of dialkyl xanthogen disulfide. The amount of the emulsifier is selected within a range surrounded by the line (a) defined by the formula I (y is pts.wt. of alkylbenzenesulfonic acid salt per 100pts.wt. of whole monomers; x is pts.wt. of beta-naphthalene formaldehyde condensate salt based on 100pts.wt. of whole monomers), the line (b) defined by the formula II, the line (c) defined by the formula III and the line (d) defined by the formula IV.
