PURPOSE:To utilize the volume of a reaction chamber effectively and to synthesize diamonds economically, by using solubility difference of carbon in a solvent metal caused by temperature gradient from the central part of reaction chamber to the readius direction so that seed crystal diamonds are grown. CONSTITUTION:The heater 15 is placed in the axial direction at the center of a reaction chamber, the source of carbon supply 13 is set through the insulating sleeve 14 at its outer periphery, and the layer of the solvent metal 12 is fixed at the outer periphery of the source 13. The several seed crystal diamonds 11 are placed at the position with which the outer periphery part of the layer of the solvent metal 12 comes into contact, and the whole members are put in an ultrahigh pressure and high-temperature device. The device is heated by the heater 15 in such a way that the diamonds reach not lower than an eutectic crystal temperature between the solvent metal and carbon under high pressure wherein the diamonds are stable. By the operation, the temperature gradient of the reaction chamber is high at the central part and low at the outer side of the radius direction. Consequently, carbon dissolvend in the solvent metal 12 is precipitated on the seed crystals 11 which are in lower temperature side, and diamond are grown. |
