PURPOSE:To obtain ethylbenzene selectively from an inexpensive raw material containing aromatic compounds except benzene and ethylene, by using a crystalline aluminosilicate catalyst which is modified with a modifying agent containing a heteropolyacid. CONSTITUTION:An inexpensive raw material containing aromatic compounds except benzene is reacted with etylene in the presence of a zeolite catalyst modified with a modifying agent containing a heteropolyacid compound to give ethylbenzene. The modification treatment of the catalyst is carried out by using 5-50wt% heteropolyacid (e.g. 12-tungstophosphoric acid) based on zeolite, treating the zeolite with the modifying agent in a low pH range at 10-90 deg.C by immersion method, spray method, etc., for 3-10hr, calcining the treated zeolite at 400-650 deg.C, blending the calcined zeolite with a binder such as alumina sol, etc., molding and calcining again. |
