Compounds of formula <IMAGE> in which R is C8-C22 alkyl; R1 is C1-C22 alkyl; m is 0 or an integer 1 to 4; n is an integer 3 to 20; o is an integer 1 to 4; and p is 0 or an integer 1 to 20, with the provisos that: 1) when R1 is a C1-C3 alkyl, then p is 0; and 2) when m is 0, n is an integer 6 to 20 and mixtures thereof are useful as surface active agents, particularly as emollients in skin care compositions.
