PURPOSE:To obtain an ion exchange membrane, having improved permselectivity and capable of reducing power consumption, by impregnating an ion exchange membrane with a mixture consisting of a vinyl compound and a crosslinkable polyvinyl compound and radically polymerizing the mixture. CONSTITUTION:An ion exchange membrane is impregnated with a mixture consisting of (A) 50-99.9wt% radically polymerizable monovinyl compound, e.g. styrenesulfonic acid, etc., and (B) 0.1-50wt% crosslinkable polyvinyl compound, e.g. divinylbenzene, etc., by a method for diluting the mixture, as necessary, and preferably irradiating with ultrasonic waves under reduced pressure. The mixture is then polymerized in the presence of, e.g. a radical polymerization initiator such as benzoyl peroxide, etc., which is previously added to the compound (A), preferably at 20-80 deg.C to afford the aimed ion exchange membrane. A compound having sulfonyl, sulfonium salt, carboxyl, carbonium salt, ester, amino group, etc., is preferred for the compound (A). |
