When trim engagement is commanded, a variable trim-engagement system delays trim engagement until the trim position has had a sufficient time to acquire correspondence with the stick position. The delay is based on the difference between the stick position and the trim position when trim engagement is commanded. Thereby a trim reference is acquired with a minimum of delay. Both dedicated hardware (Figs. 1, 2, 3) and digital (Fig. 4) embodiments are disclosed.
