PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for an exclusive-use driving source, to operate a reading head and to reduce a cost by operating a driving member by an operating member when the reading head is shifted to one edge of a paper supporting member. CONSTITUTION:When a carriage 5 comes to an initial shifting position in the outer direction of the reading shifting scope of a platen 2, an operating piece 14 butts with a butting piece 19, a turning member 16 is turned, a driving plate 30 is shifted against a spring 34 in the forward direction by an operating lever 25, a stopper groove 38 is fitted to a fitting projection locking part 35b, and thereafter, the carriage 5 returns to a reference position. When a reading action is completed and the carriage 5 is shifted to the completing shifting position in the outer direction from the initial shifting position, the driving plate 30 is shifted in the forward direction by the operating piece 14, and a fitting projection 35 is returned to the original condition by a spring 39. The carriage 5 is returned to the reference position, the driving plate 30 is returned in the backward direction, a locking lever 36 is returned to the present condition, a releasing plate 12 is turned by the prescribed quantity in the backward direction against a spring 12B, the base edge part of a reading part 10a is locked to a waiting side locking stopper 5b of the carriage 5 and comes to be a waiting position.
