Device for measuring the flow velocity of a free flow in space, or the speed of a body in a fluid medium, having a measuring head in the form of a flow body (1) which has near its thickest point first bores (2), which are distributed around its circumference and reach into its hollow interior, or a circumferential slot, and on its rear, tapering end second bores (4) which are distributed around its circumference and reach into its hollow interior, or a second circumferential slot. The hollow interior is subdivided by a partition (6) between the first and the second bores in two chambers (3, 5) into which pressure measuring connections (7, 8) open in each case. Measuring devices are used to measure the pressures in the chambers and to calculate the pressure difference, or the pressure difference between the chambers (3, 5) is measured directly. In accordance with the measuring method of the invention, the target speed is determined from the said pressure difference. <IMAGE>
