Method for reading bar code information

In the method described, a bar code is scanned by means of sound waves. The bar code itself is constructed in such a manner that the bars and the intermediate spaces exhibit different forwarding characteristics for sound. Although this method also provides the possibility of applying the bar code flat in the type of a printed image so that it can also be detected with conventional optical readers if the contrast is adequate, the bar code readable by sound waves can also be worked into a substrate surface in a manner of a relief which can be of advantage particularly in generally unpackaged articles of goods in which the additional work of attaching a bar code carrier is omitted.
