PURPOSE:beta-Phenethylalcohol in liquid phase is countercurrently brought into contact with an inert gas to remove trace amounts of low-boiling components which cause strange smells to give the titled compound of high purity which is used as a excellent perfume of rose for cosmetics. CONSTITUTION:beta-Phenethylalcohol in liquid phase is countercurrently brought into contact with an inert gas such as nitrogen, argon, air or mixture thereof in a perforated plate column, bubble cap column or packed column to remove trace amounts of strangely smelling components of low boiling points for purification. A packed column is most preferred for this purpose. The packing material may be any type, e.g., Raschig rings and may be metallic or ceramic. beta- Phenethyl alcohol is introduced from the top in the column, while the inert gas from the bottom. The volume ratio of the inert gas to the phenethyl alcohol is (10-100)/1.
