PURPOSE:To monitor the occurrence phenomenon of acoustic emission (AE) from a rotating body accurately by fixing AE sensors and the rotor of a rotary transformer to the body of revolution. CONSTITUTION:Plural AE sensors 7 are fixed to the main spindle 4 of a machine tool at positions symmetrical about the center axis of rotation of the main spindle 4, the rotor 11 of the rotary transformer 10 is fixed to the main spindle 4, and the output terminals of the AE sensors 7 are connected to the coil 13 of the rotor 11. Further, the stator 14 of the rotary transformer 10 which faces the rotor 11 is fixed to a housing as a stationary body and the output terminals of the coil 16 of the stator 14 are connected to an AE signal processor 8. Then, an AE generated by the main spindle 4 is propagated as an elastic wave in the main spindle 4 and converted by AE sensors 7 into electric signals, which pass through the coil 13 of the rotor 11 of the rotary transformer 10 to induce a secondary current by the electromagnetic induction at the coil 16 of the stator 14 on the side of the housing 6, so that the secondary current is processed as an AE signal by the AE signal processor 8.
