PURPOSE:To prevent the wear of a cylinder used for data read/write by moving a head to a prescribed cylinder position while a disk device is not used for a series of data access. CONSTITUTION:A timer 331 counts the absent state of seek after the head seek for a prescribed time. The head seek is caused by a signal SEEK or a signal INIT from a CPU 1, the timer 331 is reset at each occasion and started for the count again. Since a series of disk access is applied in general periodically, when the time of the timer 331 is over, the CPU 1 does not use the disk device for the purpose of the data access. Then a time-out signal TO of the timer 331 energizes a set switch circuit 332 and new seek is generated automatically depending on the set content of the set switch circuit 332. Thus, the head is in standby at a prescribed cylinder without any intervention of the CPU 1.
