PURPOSE:To make an equalized waveform excellent regardless of bridged tap condition and to increase the phase margin of a discrimination signal for the discrimination of an input signal by providing a phase shifter which adjusts the phase of a smoothed cancel signal and controlling the phase of the cancel signal. CONSTITUTION:The input signal (a) is inputted to an adder 3 from an input terminal 1. The adder 3 adds this input signal (a) to the cancel signal (d) from the phase shifter 7 and outputs the result to a discriminating and controlling circuit 4 and an output terminal 2. The discriminating and controlling circuit 4 discriminates the signal applied from the adder 3 and generates control signals (f) and (g) based upon the discrimination result. A cancel signal generating circuit 5 generates a cancel signal (b) with an amplitude corresponding to the contents of the control signal (f) and the cancel signal (c) which is smoothed by a smoothing filter 6 is inputted to a phase shifter 7. The phase shifter 7 varies the phase of the cancel signal (c) by a quantity corresponding to the contents of the control signal (g) and outputs a cancel signal (d). The adder 3 adds the input signal (a) from the input terminal 1 to the cancel signal (d) to cancel an echo.
